ICT & cloud footprint data at scale: an API for digital sustainability through LCA

This workshop introduces participants to Resilio DB an industry-leading footprint database forLife Cycle Assessment (LCA) of digital product & services. Designed to overcome the challenges ofperforming LCAs at scale Resilio DB API provides reliable & easy to use consistent footprint data for the ICT sector. Participants will first explore the web UI before gaining hands-on experience with the REST APIendpoints through a guided Postman collection. You'll learn how to leverage Resilio DB tosearch and assess various digital devices from servers/VMs to end-user devices or customconfigurations.

The invisible cloud: solving the Kubernetes carbon mystery

Kubernetes has a dirty secret: its power -abstraction, dynamic scheduling- makes its carbon footprint vanish. How do you solve a crime with an invisible culprit? Become a cloud detective! Using tools like Kepler and KEIT, we'll uncover energy waste, expose overprovisioning, and plot a course for a leaner cluster. Leave with a practical playbook to reduce your cloud emissions.

Analysing IT Hardware performance for circularity

IT hardware is a significant investment for companies in both money and environmental impact. In the data centre IT accounts for up to 85% of the total energy draw and requires considerable amounts of carbon, critical raw materials and water to produce. Profiling, benchmarking and understanding IT performance is crucial for making the best decisions on what to buy, how to use it and when to replace or change. This talk will provide a complete understanding of how to use performance metrics such as ITEEsv to make data led decisions on IT projects and will demonstrate how IT performance has evolved over time and how use impacts performance.

Imposing AI: Deceptive design patterns against sustainability

Generative AI is being massively deployed in digital services, at a scale that will result in significant environmental harm. We document how tech companies are transforming established user interfaces to impose AI use and show how and to what extent these strategies fit within established deceptive pattern categories. We identify two main design strategies that are implemented to impose AI use in both personal and professional contexts: imposing AI features in interfaces at the expense of existing non-AI features and promoting narratives about AI that make it harder to resist using it.

We need to talk about AI, sustainable AI

Since November 2022, we’ve heard a lot about Generative AI and how powerful this tool is and will be. But with great power comes great responsibility (and often, great environmental costs). In fact, it’s estimated that AI alone could account for 14% of total global emissions by 2040, while its water usage may hit 6.6 billion cubic meters by 2027. However, sustainability is not just about the environment: it's also about people, ethics and transparency. We will explore some of the current issues surrounding such powerful tools in order to pave the way for true innovation.

More than carbon: the full environmental footprint of AI

The rapid expansion of AI has intensified concerns about its environmental sustainability, yet current assessments predominantly focus on operational carbon emissions. Our study presents the first comprehensive multi-criteria lifecycle assessment of AI training, examining 16 environmental impact categories through primary data collection and elemental analysis of the Nvidia A100 GPU. Carbon-only accounting fundamentally misrepresents AI's globally distributed impact profile, creating a dangerous blind spot in the sustainability discourse. Sustainable AI development demands fundamental changes in how we assess, communicate, and govern AI's environmental impacts.

Limits to the evidence on AI’s climate benefits and their implications

What evidence supports AI’s positive impact on the environment? Since 2018, several reports have explored AI’s potential, but their findings are contested in academic and policy debates. The first part of this presentation reviews the different forms of evidence available, which comes mainly from expert surveys, economic models, and catalogues of use cases - mostly focused on machine learning rather than generative AI. The second part of the presentation examines the implications: weak accountability mechanisms make such evidence unreliable and hinder efforts to assess impacts at scale.
“The blossoming of tools and initiatives in greening IT is a heart-warming signal from the digital sector. More than ever sharing experience and insights is pivotal for actors to ramp-up their effort.”

about apidays

Why they attended our past Paris editions

“Sustainability is one of the most important subjects facing technology companies today. The Green IO conference is without doubt one of the best places to learn about industry best practices, to exchange ideas and to discuss with others facing similar challenges.”

Diarmuid GILL, CTO (Criteo)

“The Green IO conference in Paris this year was highly appreciated for its practical approaches to digital sustainability, grounded in the real-life experiences and shared insights of development teams and architects.”

Maija Fournier, Platform Architect (OECD)

“It was a pleasure to participate in the Green IO 2023 forum! In the very technophile setting of the API Days, a great day of acculturation on the climate issues of digital activity. Top-notch speakers to raise awareness, engage the dynamics of eco-responsibility and illustrate concrete initiatives from players in digital, travel or industry. Positive challenge!”
