When ants do it better: closing the sustainability communication gap

In my journey through IT and sustainability, I’ve seen how we still work in silos—everyone is optimising their own patch, but missing how fixes in one spot can cause breakages in another. We need to zoom out and see the bigger picture. Communication is our secret sauce, and fun fact: a study showed ants actually solve problems better than humans when we can't talk to each other. So let’s learn from the ants—collaborate, communicate, and build greener IT together.

Translating principles to product: the Salesforce sustainable AI blueprint

In this session you will learn about Salesforce's blueprint for translating principles into responsible AI products, detailing how core values like Trust, Ethics, and Sustainability are operationalized. Examining Salesforce's dual approach: minimizing AI's footprint (Sustainable AI) and leveraging AI for broader sustainability challenges (AI for Sustainability). Topics include technical methods for embedding efficiency (e.g., model right-sizing) and initiatives like the AI Energy Score promoting transparency across the industry.

The Internet is getting emptier; that's a sustainability problem

The energy efficiency and carrying capacity of computer networks continuously improve. Yet, the Internet’s energy footprint keeps growing while networks get emptier… Paradoxal? In fact, the power draw of networking hardware is almost constant, that is, independent of the traffic volume. Second, many networks, such as those operated by Internet Service Providers (ISP), are intentionally over-provisioned. Combine the two: most energy is spent on turning on barely-used hardware! In this talk, I will give real-life examples of this problem and present practical ideas to reduce the Internet’s energy footprint today.

Practical approaches to measuring software sustainability via tooling and eco labels

This talk covers why and how to measure software energy use—for understanding, tracking, optimizing, and reporting. It compares SCI and Blue Angel for Software, explores alternative methods (e.g., ISO 14001, web metrics), and introduces the Green Metrics Tool. Real-world examples, including work with Nextcloud, illustrate the data, time, and setup needed for certification. Website measurement and the large differences in their energy use are also discussed.

Blue Angel - An auditor's report on the eco-label for software

CO₂ emissions from IT are growing rapidly, especially through software. Positive: software has a significant impact on resource requirements. The Blue Angel, the first environmental label for energy- and resource-saving software, published new award criteria in August 2024. This webinar shows ... - the type of software for which the Blue Angel eco-label provides for certification - what essential properties the software must have - what evidence is required, - what the application process looks like, - what costs are incurred by the applicant and - why certification can be worthwhile.

    Sustainable software engineering

Establishing Sustainability as a built-in quality for all digitalization offerings and our software engineering is our vision. Our Sustainability Framework supports sustainable architecture & operations for our solutions. Sustainable operations starts with creating transparency for power consumption as a prerequisite for identifying potential improvements. In addition we need to estabilish Eco-Desing principles for software as software plays an increaslingly critical role in our digital world. Design software intentionally around environmental impact and lifecycle management.

Creativity in the age of AI

AI promises more, more output, more efficiency and more creativity. How creative are the results really? And what does creativity actually mean in the context of AI? Gen AI promises to make everybody more creative. But is it a catalyst or just the illusion of creativity? And at what real costs does AI create? The use of AI comes at a high price on many ends: environmentally as well as societal. And when we speak about creativity it does not end here: another price is paid by other creatives and in the end by ourselves - since our creation could just be the future result of the prompt of someone else. From there we even need to look further down to the core of creativity. What is creativity and can AI in general be creative? Can AI be a driver for unlimited creativity? Or will everything look the same in a few years?

Beneath the pixels: hidden energy eating monsters in product design

Every year we create even bigger, more data intensive digital products. We contribute to unsustainable behavior and over-consumption. We secretly support a stressed society and mental health issues. We overlook some hidden energy eating monsters. Data, data, data. In form of third party tools, in form of user tracking, in form of all kinds of data waste we collect in our web. But, we can take simple steps in product design to conquer those problems. Let’s tackle them.

Using Airbus purchasing power to influence the IT Value Chain

The financial sector can drive substantial change in greenhouse gas emissions by leveraging its buying power. As the industry trends toward "as-a-service" models, it's crucial to recognize that shifting emissions from internal operations (scopes 1 and 2) to external vendors (scope 3) doesn't absolve responsibility. Sustainable procurement practices must transform the entire value chain, encompassing hardware, software, and professional services. This involves enforcing strict vendor codes of conduct, imposing rigorous sustainability requirements, and fostering collaborative environments to develop innovative, environmentally, and socially impactful solutions. According to the Gartner definition, Vendor management is a discipline that enables organizations to control costs, drive service excellence and mitigate risks to gain increased value from their vendors throughout the deal life cycle so do as Sustainability best practices.
