Tuesday 9th December 2025
11:00 to 11:25WorkshopSee moreReduce cloud emissions, save millions – engineering workflows using Infracost & Greenpixie
Infracost brings real-time cost awareness into engineering workflows. Greenpixie does the same for cloud emissions. By combining these two datasets at the point where infrastructure decisions are made, teams gain a clearer picture of both the financial and environmental impact of their changes. This unified view helps engineers identify optimisations that drastically cut emissions while also increasing cloud cost savings. In this session we’ll demo the joint workflow and show how teams can start applying it immediately. In collaboration with

14:30 to 14:55WorkshopSee moreA day in the carbon life of an LLM prompt: why Large Language Models' environmental footprint may be far less than the footprint of their software scaffolds, and how that changes our metrics, advocacy and policy approach
Participants will track a prompt’s journey from query to response using a new open-source tool, revealing the environmental impact of LLM software scaffolds. We’ll compare the impact of model types, tuning methods, context and response lengths, system prompts, prompt injection, tool use and architectures on token count, inference emissions, and enabled emissions. Results will show that the most polluting model with the least polluting scaffold is still greener than the reverse, highlighting that software implementations, being deterministic, interpretable, and traceable, are key to new approaches in environmental AI metrics, design, and policy. In collaboration with
15:00 to 15:25WorkshopSee moreBridge the transparency gap: evaluating LLMs footprint with EcoLogits
LLMs are reshaping technology and the way we work. Yet, the information needed to model their environmental impact remains undisclosed, leaving users and companies in the dark about the corresponding emissions. In this talk, we introduce Ecologits, an open-source Python tool and methodology to approximate the environmental impacts of LLMs. We’ll demo the tool itself, as well as Ecologits Calculator, a user-friendly web tool for assessing typical requests. In collaboration with

Day 2: Green IT from the trenches ... and still winning! [Room: Dragonnier 6]
Wednesday 10th December 2025
09:40 to 09:50OPENING REMARKSSee moreOne step after another: finding the right pace for sustainability amid headwinds
What Chinese high speed trains, Dutch resistant during WW2 and circus artists have all to do with sustainability in Tech? More than you think... In the opening remarks of this 3rd edition of Green IO Paris, I will share with you some thoughts about the resiliency of our fight for a sustainable digital world empowering humankind to thrive within the planetary boundaries. Presentation slides09:50 to 10:20KeynoteSee moreWhere Power passes: territorial bottlenecks across key infrastructure corridors
Structural power is associated with the relative position that states, firms, or institutions occupy within a global hierarchy. Nodal power, by contrast, arises from control over bottlenecks through which flows must pass. In contemporary information systems, such bottlenecks appear simultaneously in software stacks, in data collection and storage, and in the material organisation of networks, energy grids, and transport links. Coelho uses the notions of nodal power and territorial bottlenecks to describe dense nodes of dependency that make visible the asymmetric exposure of ecosystems and populations, and to show how tensions between private interests and collective access to resources are spatially inscribed and stabilised over time. Day 3: AI environmental footprint from all angles [Room: Dragonnier 6]
Thursday 11th December 2025
09:15 to 09:40OPENING REMARKSSee moreTech Barbarians at the gate
In my opening remarks last year I shared a picture of our Asterix’s village surrounded by Big Tech’s Roman camps. This year’s picture is less “cute” with Tech barbarians threatening to tear apart the very fabric of our societies. Or do they? Aren’t we all the barbarians to someone else? Expect this talk to follow unexpected leads and help us understand each other perspectives, including (ir)responsible techies’ ones. Presentation slides09:45 to 10:40KeynoteSee moreHot takes, cool planet: debating AI sustainability
Join three leading AI sustainability experts in a fast-paced, live debate session where they defend provocative positions, some they may not even believe. Through humor, rigor, and audience interaction, we’ll explore the paradoxes of AI and climate: from proxies vs. real data, to data centers’ local impacts, to whether innovation can solve AI’s energy demands. Expect shifting perspectives, live polls, and actionable insights. Presentation slides10:40 to 11:00Coffee Break & Networking | Nicolas Delay's art exhibition
11:00 to 11:25TalkSee moreIs carbon-aware computing such a good idea?
Carbon aware computing revisited: the uncomfortable truth about a comforting pattern. The idea of shifting compute jobs to the times and places where the electricity mix is most fully powered by renewable sources makes intuitive sense. Yet with two limited exceptions, it won't reduce emissions, and may create perverse effects. The issue may be even bigger, and raises difficult questions about two pillars of digital sustainability, efficiency and emissions, and what happens when we measure the wrong things. Presentation slides11:30 to 11:55TalkSee moreBeyond PUE – why datacenter efficiency is all about IT
As datacenter energy use and emissions continue to rise sharply, relying on isolated metrics like PUE alone no longer reflects true sustainability. This session challenges conventional assumptions by exploring why meaningful progress requires a full-stack perspective – one that integrates IT efficiency, but also waste heat recycling, and carbon impact. Participants will gain insights into how measurable performance, rather than promises or partial indicators, can drive real improvement in digital infrastructure sustainability. Presentation slides12:00 to 12:25TalkSee moreIT Hardware performance & sustainability: lessons from 500 data centre projects and over 1,000,000 benchmark results
IT hardware is a significant investment for companies in both money and environmental impact. In the data centre IT accounts for up to 85% of the total energy draw and requires considerable amounts of carbon, critical raw materials and water to produce. Profiling, benchmarking and understanding IT performance is crucial for making the best decisions on what to buy, how to use it and when to replace or change. This talk will provide a complete understanding of how to use performance metrics such as ITEEsv to make data led decisions on IT projects and will demonstrate how IT performance has evolved over time and how use impacts performance. 14:30 to 14:55TalkSee moreImposing AI: Deceptive design patterns against sustainability
Generative AI is being massively deployed in digital services, at a scale that will result in significant environmental harm. We document how tech companies are transforming established user interfaces to impose AI use and show how and to what extent these strategies fit within established deceptive pattern categories. We identify two main design strategies that are implemented to impose AI use in both personal and professional contexts: imposing AI features in interfaces at the expense of existing non-AI features and promoting narratives about AI that make it harder to resist using it. Presentation slides15:00 to 15:25TalkSee moreFrugal AI: 10 myths, busted
A.k.a. How to convince your CTO to shift to greener AI Generative and agentic AI’s environmental impacts are set to grow sevenfold by 2030, according to GreenIT.fr’s latest study alone. Despite such alarming figures, there are all sorts of excuses for inaction, be it: a lack of knowledge of the true extent of the impacts and how to measure them; blind buy-in to big tech’s “bigger is better” mantra; or classic cloud provider lock-in. Here’s how to answer all those objections, and hopefully shift your organisation towards more frugal AI usage! 15:55 to 16:20TalkSee moreMore than carbon: what's the environmental footprint of Nvidia Chips powering AI?
The rapid expansion of AI has intensified concerns about its environmental sustainability, yet current assessments predominantly focus on operational carbon emissions. Our study presents the first comprehensive multi-criteria lifecycle assessment of AI training, examining 16 environmental impact categories through primary data collection and elemental analysis of the Nvidia A100 GPU. Carbon-only accounting fundamentally misrepresents AI's globally distributed impact profile, creating a dangerous blind spot in the sustainability discourse. Sustainable AI development demands fundamental changes in how we assess, communicate, and govern AI's environmental impacts. Presentation slides16:25 to 16:50TalkSee moreLimits to the evidence on AI’s climate benefits and their implications
What evidence supports AI’s positive impact on the environment? Since 2018, several reports have explored AI’s potential, but their findings are contested in academic and policy debates. The first part of this presentation reviews the different forms of evidence available, which comes mainly from expert surveys, economic models, and catalogues of use cases - mostly focused on machine learning rather than generative AI. The second part of the presentation examines the implications: weak accountability mechanisms make such evidence unreliable and hinder efforts to assess impacts at scale. Presentation slides
