Molecular Intelligence: Accelerating Sustainable Energy with AI

AI is reaching power limits faster than energy grids can scale, making sustainability a materials challenge. While Green IT has focused on optimizing software and infrastructure, the physical materials layer, responsible for up to 40% of data center energy losses, remains largely overlooked. This talk introduces Molecular Intelligence: a physics‑guided AI approach that accelerates sustainable materials discovery by up to 10×, while reducing experimental waste by as much as 90%. Real‑world examples highlight next‑generation electrolytes, GaN/SiC power semiconductors, and low‑carbon industrial materials capable of delivering terawatt‑hour‑scale energy savings. This talk clarifies the hidden materials layer in the Green IT stack and why integrating AI with materials science is essential for building digital systems that are not only efficient but truly sustainable. Green IO Speed Mentoring session | Building your Green IT career stack: The essential roles & frameworks in Green IT | Introduction to The Matcha Initiative

Green IT isn’t just technology—it’s a mindset. It challenges us as technologists to build systems that are not only efficient but responsible. Through my experience as a tech podcaster, I’ve seen how sustainability is no longer optional; it’s becoming central to how organizations design and scale technology. Green IT careers start with strong fundamentals, grow into advanced skills like cloud, AI, and DevOps, and are elevated by sustainability intelligence—understanding carbon impact and energy use. Frameworks like ESG and global standards guide progress, leading to strategic roles in sustainable transformation. While challenges remain, the opportunities in Green AI and climate tech are vast. Ultimately, Green IT builds on what we know to create a future where technology and sustainability go hand in hand. Presentation slides

Think Tank Problem Statement reveal & Lightning Round presentations featuring: Cinch, ClimateUX, ViroGreen

Singapore faces a growing e-waste challenge, driven by rapid device upgrades and a culture of ownership that leaves millions of phones unused or improperly discarded. This presentation explores the scale of the issue, why the traditional “buy-use-throw” model no longer works, and how a circular approach can extend device lifecycles. It also showcases how Cinch’s Device-as-a-Service model enables reuse, refurbishment, and responsible recycling, making tech access more sustainable, affordable, and scalable for Singapore and the region. Sentience & Sustainability: Aligning AI with Human Values

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly intelligent and the question of consciousness is no longer easy to dismiss. Whether it truly experiences or only simulates remains a philosophical topic but what is clear, is its growing role in solving sustainability challenges. However, between uncertainty about sentience and certainty about impact lies the real issue of human values. If AI may one day feel and already acts at scale, the question is not just what it is becoming, but what we are choosing it to serve.

An unhinged journey all the way from the middle ages to the hype fueled AI frontier, touching the questions about the technology many have but don’t dare to ask, such as Who is to blame for AI? If there’s an AI race, where is the finishing line? Will investors see ROI, and from where? Will AI agents take all the jobs? Is there such a thing as sustainable, governable AI? How kiasu should we be about AI adoption? Presentation slides

The Efficiency Architecture: Building Carbon-aware Infrastructure with AI

Real-time AI systems promise instant insight, but every prediction costs energy, compute, and infrastructure. As organizations demand hyper-local forecasting for logistics, climate adaptation, and operations, the real challenge isn’t just accuracy; it’s efficiency. This talk explores how geospatial thinking can reduce unnecessary computation in spatio-temporal AI. Using hyper-local weather prediction, illustrated through Formula 1 rainfall forecasts across track sectors, we’ll examine architecture patterns like spatial indexing, caching, and lightweight models that make intelligent systems faster, cheaper, and more sustainable. Conscious AI for the Physical World: World Models & Sustainability

ChatGPT can pass the bar exam but can't catch a ball. That matters because 80% of the global workforce doesn't work behind a desk. This is why AI for the physical world is the next big thing. But at what environmental cost? At first sight, Physical AI accumulates the burdens of both data centres and manufacturing. This talk explores a new AI architecture that could change the equation: World Models learn like children, predict like physicists, and allow smart systems to solve concrete challenges, some environmental, all while consuming a fraction of the energy. AI in LCA: Technical and Ethical Perspectives

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the methodology used to measure the environmental footprint of products and systems, is increasingly being augmented by AI. But supposed efficiency gains come with real risks that the sustainability community cannot afford to ignore. Our analysis finds that while AI can be implemented in roughly half of all LCA workflow steps, most applications remain research prototypes with unquantified benefits and low real-world adoption. More critically, transparency, accountability, and fairness emerge as high-risk ethical concerns when AI enters the LCA process. The core message: under current limitations, AI should augment expert judgment, support comparability and adherence to ISO standards. Presentation slides

Building Planet-positive Datacenters in Singapore: Balancing AI Power with Planetary Health

AI is leading to dramatic increases in the volume of water and power that data centers consume. This is putting them in the spotlight and causing pushback from communities. Sustainable best practices need to be integrated. Strategic site selection ensures alignment with ecological sensitivities and regulatory requirements, while innovative cooling technologies and water stewardship reduce environmental impact. Renewable energy integration and carbon reduction strategies anchor climate responsibility, complemented by nature-positive approaches that safeguard biodiversity. Equally critical is the social license to operate, earned through transparent engagement with communities and stakeholders and the implementation of these best practices. Together, these elements form a holistic model of a sustainable data center, one that includes environmental responsibility, technological innovation, and social equity. Presentation slides

Algorithmic Stewardship: Managing the Lifecycle of Responsible AI

AI agents are rapidly becoming ubiquitous, embedded in everyday tools, connected devices, and enterprise workflows. As they increasingly run in the background as alwayson copilots, they also raise new demands for energy efficiency. The electricity consumption of data centers - AI powerhouses – has grown 12% per year in the past 5 years. Is increasing the number and capacity of data centers the only solution to accelerating AI deployment? During this talk, you will learn about the energy consumption of existing AI models and how to cut the computation cost of new models through optimizing algorithms, infrastructure, and hardware without compromising the quality of output. The Open Blueprint for Trust & Transparency

As more organizations get swept up in the AI wave, what distinguishes the leaders from the laggards would be the "how" not just the "what" of adoption and implementation of AI driven systems of work. Where large corporates have the luxury of assembling teams to look at governance and systems of trust and transparency, how might smaller organizations think about designing integrity, transparency and building trust in AI? IT, AI, and the ocean: friends or foes?

In this talk, Dr. Simon Schillebeeckx discusses the complex relationship between IT, AI and the health of the ocean. While the knowledge gained through AI has been used meaningfully already to help protect coral reefs and advances in robotics are enabling the cleaning of the ocean bed, the rising energy footprint of the technology also accelerates climate change with nefarious consequences for ocean health. IT solutions can be used to better monitor changes in the ocean while some companies are also deploying APIs to boost ocean health by linking loyalty to ecosystem restoration. Presentation slides
