AI’s energy dilemma: empowering developers for a sustainable future

As AI reshapes the technology landscape, its environmental cost cannot be ignored. With compute demands growing 4-5x annually, AI’s carbon footprint is poised to double data center emissions by 2030. In this keynote, we’ll explore the dual role of AI as a challenge and opportunity for sustainability. Discover how industry innovations—from energy-efficient hardware to software optimizations—are reducing AI’s energy footprint. More importantly, learn how developers can design smarter, simpler systems, integrate energy observability into their pipelines and turn AI into a force for sustainability without compromising progress. Navigating the twin transformations: AI and sustainability – from large models to green practices

The world stands at the cusp of two transformative shifts: the AI revolution and the energy transition. Dr. Lawrence Wee, Director, Business & Ecosystems, IMDA, will explore their intertwined nature, emphasising the need for a sustainable approach to AI development. He will address the growing energy demands of AI, and discuss strategies for mitigating their environmental impact through techniques like model slimming and optimisation. Dr. Wee will share Singapore's multifaceted strategy for greening the digital landscape, including green data centres, green software, and global partnerships. Presentation slides

    Datacenter decarbonization through software efficiency

If we can make software energy-aware, we’ll unlock higher levels of datacenter energy efficiency. However, much of today’s software isn’t energy-aware. In the best of circumstances, it is cost-aware – in the worst, not even that. Using cost as a proxy for carbon emissions has its pitfalls. Conversely, making existing software energy-aware has an engineering cost. In this talk, we’ll discuss why energy is a better proxy for carbon emissions. We’ll also discuss two techniques that can help strike a balance between energy awareness and engineering cost – particularly for enterprise applications. Presentation slides

    Transformative ESG work in manufacturing

At the GreenIO Conference, I will share how Razer Inc. is driving transformative ESG practices in manufacturing—moving beyond compliance to real impact. As Global Sustainability Lead, I’ve led efforts to integrate sustainable materials, adopt circular economy principles, and achieve net zero goals. We’re advancing ethical supply chains, leveraging technology for ESG tracking, and fostering collaboration through initiatives like #GoGreenWithRazer. These actions reflect our belief that sustainability is not just a responsibility but a strategic advantage—one that drives innovation, accountability, and long-term value across the industry. Accor case study; a greener IT through migration to the cloud

With sustainability higher on the tech agenda for a few years now, a number of studies have been published over time showing that carbon footprint on the cloud may be significantly better than managing resources on-prem for most companies. At the same time, it is estimated that, globally, the Carbon footprint of Digital and Cloud has surpassed the aviation footprint. So where’s the truth? In 2022 and 2023, Accor achieved a massive cloud migration of 45 regional on-prem datacenters and server rooms across the world. The teams took that opportunity to assess at the same time the Carbon footprint evolution in this before / after cloud migration context. In his talk, Khang will take you through the sustainability learnings of this major migration program, as well as the considerations Accor has been taking towards Green IT as part of its journey to the Cloud. Designing for change: how UX can help solve the climate crisis

Tackling climate change isn’t just about awareness—it’s about action. Yet, sustainable choices are often difficult, unclear, or unappealing. User experience (UX) design can change that. This talk introduces UX principles and behavioral nudges, showing how tech and digital tools can drive sustainable behavior at both individual and communal levels. From smart thermostats to choice architecture, we’ll explore how data-driven decisions and intentional design can make green choices the default—shaping a future where sustainability is effortless. E-waste in Singapore; a dream?

A more crucial point, the environmental impact of technology is also often underestimated because the processes of its production, use, and disposal are largely invisible to consumers. In Singapore alone, we generate 60,000 tonnes of e-waste annually – roughly equivalent to discarding 37.5 million laptops – yet only 6% of this is recycled to recover valuable resources. The discussion will cover Singapore’s e-waste recycling landscape and the solutions KGS offers. It will also highlight case studies demonstrating how the KGS approach has helped stakeholders improve their recycling efforts through sustainable and efficient practices. Presentation slides

5 lines of code to save the world?

Much of the focus in Green IO is understandably on measuring, reducing, and eliminating the carbon and water footprints of digital technology. Today, especially AI is accused of accelerating climate change. Yet, as renewable energy skyrockets, green digital technology is evolving into something totally different. By 2030, the primary role of green digital technology will be to boost customer loyalty and business growth through the restoration of nature. Handprint.tech was founded in 2020 with a vision to create the first universal impact API and enable this. Let’s peek under the hood together. Presentation slides

    Tipping the scales: democratising measurement

For centuries, those in power have used measurement to their advantage. In the digital age, this imbalance grows as software’s boundaries blur. It’s time to fight back, not with protests, but with data. This talk explores how measurement has been used to seize and reclaim power, leading to today’s sustainability battlefield. The Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) standard helps measure software’s environmental impact. You’ll learn to calculate SCI using the open-source Impact Framework and join a new wave of activists “watchers”, who ensure transparency. Let’s tip the scales back in our favor, one calculation at a time. Presentation slides
