    The Digital Future Is Degrowth

An inconvenient truth is that the things we do, the actions we take, are not enough: sustainability in our digital world is not spreading fast enough. We need more. Or less. Here's how to apply agile principle number 10 - maximising the amount of work not done - to everything you do - or decide not to do - in our digital realm. Let's rethink our endless growth paradigm and walk away with a renewed love for the YAGNI-principe (you ain' t gonna need it!) And with practical inspiration from Stoic philosophy that less is more.

Embedding GreenOps in Practice: From Framework to Organizational Impact

How can organizations embed GreenOps in a practical, scalable, and organization-wide way? On behalf of the National Coalition for Sustainable Digitalization (NCDD), we present the GreenOps Framework, complemented by insights from the Sustainable IT Impact Assessment (SIIA). Together, they offer a practical, end-to-end framework that helps organizations understand, prioritize, and act on the environmental footprint of their IT. After briefly touching on the underlying principles, the focus shifts to real-world case examples that show how organizations are turning sustainable IT ambition into day-to-day practice. Through concrete experiences and lessons learned, this talk aims to inspire participants on how GreenOps can be embedded across teams, processes, and decision-making to drive meaningful and lasting impact.

KEIT, One Year On: Measuring Kubernetes Carbon on a Sovereign Cloud

A year and a half ago at Cloud Native Sustainability Week here in Amsterdam, we introduced KEIT, an open-source tool for measuring Kubernetes emissions. A lot has changed since: cloud sovereignty has taken on real urgency, European clouds have shipped native carbon APIs, and Kepler, the energy tool we'd relied on, works best on bare metal, which not every cluster offers.

    Green Coding with GitHub Actions

Sustainability in software requires moving beyond intent to automation. In this session, Max and Wilco will demonstrate how to automate green software implementation using GitHub Actions, focusing on two primary models: rules-based automation and agentic performance engineering. They will provide an overview of the tooling, share live examples, and walk through real-world case studies. You will leave with immediately actionable approaches and a practical framework for reducing the environmental footprint of your software through intelligent automation.

The Human Side of Sustainable IT

Sustainable IT is often framed as a regulatory or technical challenge, which can feel overwhelming to tackle as an individual contributor. In this talk, Corina explores digital sustainability through the lens of people, processes and technology, focusing on the opportunities for impact in our daily (work) life. From personal choices to architectural decisions, this session highlights where individuals can influence change, inside or outside formal sustainability roles. It also explores how communities can act as a catalyst for change, showing how shared learning and connecting with like-minded peers can turn green IT from an abstract concept into tangible action. Sustainable IT is a journey that does not start with perfect solutions, rather with awareness and intentional actions, enabled also through communities. One Byte at a time.

Generating Energy-Efficient Code via Large-Language Models--Where are we now?

The rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) has led to their widespread adoption in development pipelines. We empirically assess the energy efficiency of Python code generated by LLMs against human-written code and code developed by a Green software expert. We test 363 solutions to 9 coding problems from the EvoEval benchmark using 6 widespread LLMs with 4 prompting techniques and comparing them to human-developed solutions. Energy consumption is measured on three different hardware platforms: a server, a PC, and a Raspberry Pi for a total of ~881h (36.7 days). Human solutions are 16% more energy-efficient on the server and 3% on the Raspberry Pi, while LLMs outperform human developers by 25% on the PC. Prompting does not consistently lead to energy savings, where the most energy-efficient prompts vary by hardware platform. The code developed by a Green software expert is consistently more energy-efficient by at least 17% to 30% against all LLMs on all hardware platforms. Even though LLMs exhibit relatively good code generation capabilities, no LLM-generated code was more energy-efficient than that of an experienced Green software developer, suggesting that as of today there is still a great need of human expertise for developing energy-efficient Python code.

Why they attended our past Amsterdam editions

“It was a blast! Thanks again Gaël & team for gathering such a positive & optimistic bunch of responsible technologists 💚”

James Martin, Founder (BetterTech)

“I am generally lukewarm on sustainability conferences these days, but one I always recommend is Green IO 🎙️. Why? 1. It is co-located with "mainstream" tech conferences, leading to the cross-pollination that we so desperately need. 2. Gaël DUEZ and team do an excellent job curating a technical yet accessible agenda (https://lnkd.in/gAEzz45W) focused on specific examples of action. 3. This heavily reduces the amount of empty corporate PR presentations.”

Boris GamazaychikovBoris Gamazaychikov, Head of AI Sustainability (Salesforce)

“Thank you Green IO 🎙️ team for the highly inspiring conference, bringing the experts and building the community!”

Maja Trajanoska, Software Engineer (G+D Netcetera)
